Lifespan is how long you live. Healthspan is how many of those years you spend in good health. Mind-span is the one we think about least, because it’s the hardest to see. It’s how long the mind stays sharp as the years add up.A sharp mind means thinking quickly, finding the word in the moment, the name still there, holding the thread of a thought, knowing why you walked into the room. How the mind ages.

Some cognitive change is a normal part of getting older. Names take a moment longer, focus wanders more easily. It is ordinary, and it begins earlier than most people expect. One large study measured it from the mid-forties1.But the way the mind ages is not fixed. In a two-year programme of diet, exercise and mental activity, older adults improved their cognition more than those who carried on as usual2, a finding more recent trials have continued to test3.Everyday habits shape how the mind holds up, and midlife is when it starts to really matter.
